Sammy Carlson left competitive skiing almost a decade ago. Even though he had 5 X Games podiums under his belt and a plethora of other accolades, the Oregon native made the call to step away from the big lights. He entered the X Games Real Ski Backcountry in 2014 and won gold. After that, it was all sleds, helicopters and touring for what many called the new face of skiing. Sammy decided to fully commit himself to a life of backcountry pursuit, putting all his knowledge and skills towards learning what the mountains have to offer. For Sammy and those who’ve watched his journey, it’s clear that his decision, while challenging, has been fantastic for himself and the sport.
“Vision” is a testament to his commitment, hard work and enjoyment of the backcountry. This 15-minute film is comprised of mostly POV shots from his recent movies “North of Now” (2021) and “YUP” (2022). Both projects are mesmerizing and will get your heart beating out of your chest.
An outlier in the best way, Sammy has cemented himself as one of the best skiers to ever exist. Few skiers have ever had the success he has in the park and gone on to devour all facets of big mountain and freeride skiing. It’s not just hard, it’s damn near impossible. What stands out about his riding to me is not the skill, technique, or strength but rather his style. His line selection and ability to paint tricks that no one else has ever pictures is electric and inspiring to watch. We might never ski like Sammy C, but we can see his Vision!
Keep your eyes peeled for another film from Sammy, “KAMASE,” premiering this November
