There’s no doubting the greatness of Sammy Carlson. It would be like questioning whether the sun will rise in the east and set in the west. He’s 35 years old and is skiing like his legs are made of concrete, with a creativity in the mountains that is all but unrivaled. Massive faces look like a backyard playground under Carlson’s paintbrush. You’ll this to be the case in his latest film, “GROWN.”
This 11-minute heater was filmed entirely in Valdez, Alaska with the talented Black Ops Valdez crew. Home to some of the most daunting lines on earth, the Chugach Mountains receive over 1,000 inches of snow every winter. Arctic storms blanket these toothy mountains, creating an environment hardly replicated.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about this project is that it wasn’t his sole focus with years of prep. Carlson has released several films over the last few seasons, releasing movies that consistently make the rest of the ski world stop and stare in awe. His most recent solo films, “Kamase,” “Vision” and “North of Now,” have all been equally as remarkable. If you haven’t checked those projects out, be sure to put them on this evening’s to-do list. For now, enjoy this visual milestone in Carlson’s incredible career.
