MAGMA Delivers Their Finest Work Yet in “ASH”

Featured Image: Owen Dahlberg | Skiers: Hunter Hess, Alex Hall

An ode to spring sessions across the pond, “ASH” is a beautifully nostalgic short film from the good people of MAGMA. Hunter Hess, Alex Hall and Owen Dahlberg have been at it for several years, and to see not only their skiing but their artistic lens fall more into place each year is a thing of beauty. Just when you think they can’t get any better, they do.

Dahlberg is a cinematic wizard, and this is no hot take. He’s one of the best at what he does. From photos to films and everything in between, he is a key individual pushing creativity in freeskiing to new heights. His mark is evident here, with every transition, zoom-in and spider web meticulously placed and finely tuned.

Shoutout to Elias Syrjä of course, who makes a surprise appearance in the second half of the movie and, to the surprise of nobody, blows the roof off with his riding.

The filmmaking side of skiing is not a competition; that’s what makes it so great. But if it were, we doubt that many could rival the creations of this team. Every component of “ASH” is a well-oiled machine that leaves you wanting more. We’ll be patiently spinning hot laps this winter, waiting for the next one to drop.
