On Movie Monday, FREESKIER brings you free movies from the wide world of skiing. With a mix of old and new, this is where you can find your weekly dose of freeski history, adrenaline and cinema mastery all in one.

The Big Picture crew holds a special place in the hearts of us at FREESKIER. While this group has put out many incredible short films over the years, “Lite Years” remains a work of art at the top of its class. Consisting of Chris and Sean Logan, Parker White, and a revolving cast of names that included Duncan Adams, Tanner Rainville, Mike King and Adam Delorme, this team has crafted some beautiful projects that helped define what a ski movie could be in the age of the internet and social media. They steered away from the annual film in favor of short, professional pieces. The result is a collection of works that, years later, shines amongst the competition.

In their grand finale film, we find the names listed above (with the exception of Delorme) roaming around the Pacific Northwest, with Sean Logan’s impeccable eye capturing the adventure from behind the camera. And while the skiing is truly incredible, with Logan, White, Adams, Rainville and King all contributing jaw-dropping backcountry segments, it’s the atmosphere of “Lite Years” that sets it apart. The Big Picture team cultivated a unique feel of creative and authentic art that intentionally lacked a forced plot or narrative; something that arches over many of the modern-day mega ski flicks.

“Lite Years” delivers the quintessential independent ski film. By ditching large labels for personal and artistic freedom, The Big Picture crew was able to tell their own story exactly how they wanted to. Liam Downey touched on this idea years ago. In a 2014 FREESKIER article, Downey recounted his time on the road with this crew and stated, “As a former athlete whose career lived and died in an era when freeskiing films catered, in the main, to the freeskiers who watched them, I was glad to see that The Big Picture boys still had respect for pure forms… What they had gone searching for, what they had found, was the autonomy of a blank canvas.” Settle in for a master class in backcountry filmmaking perfection.
