A Whole Lotta BS: Movember with Matt Margetts

The first time I really got to know Matt Margetts was during my trip to Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Although we were acquaintances going into the weekend I left feeling like I had gained a close friend. Matt went out of his way to show me a good time, introduce me to his group of friends, and take me to the places I needed to see during my short trip.

I tell this story to summarize the type of person Matt Margetts is. He loves to have fun, but puts others first in doing so. He is at it again by participating in this year’s Movember. Movember is a fundraiser that raises money for prostate cancer. The concept is simple, grow a mustache and ask for donations. Margetts is working hard to raise as much money as possible. Karma and talent are repaying him for his generosity as seen by his cover shot on this month’s issue of Freeskier Magazine.

A Whole Lotta BS: Matt Margetts

FS: So how about that Freeskier cover?

How about it! I’m ecstatic. I can’t believe I’ve got a photo in a magazine, led alone on the cover of Freeskier. It’s totally a dream come true and a goal in my ski career I can check off the list.

That was a pretty good way to start your year. What do you inspire for this upcoming season?

Podiums! I would like to stand on a bunch of podiums this season. I’ve been training really hard and learned and perfected lots of new tricks. I’m working very hard now at my job so I can afford to make it to all the contests this year. I’m very excited to see how this season plays out. I feel like it’s all in my control this year.

Along with many others, you are patiently waiting to see whether Halfpipe will be approved for the 2014 Olympics. What do you believe the outcome is going to be?

“I’ve been patiently waiting for a track to explode on”. All along 50 Cents’ just been writing lyrics about Halfpipe skiing getting into the Olympics. Halfpipe Skiing will 100% be in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. It just doesn’t make sense why it hasn’t been included yet. The facility is already built. All they need is the ski athletes and a different line up of judges to make it happen. All the stars are slowly aligning to make it happen and when it happens I will be there.

What is the inspiration behind your mustache?

Initially the inspiration was the fact that I was working in the bush for a month, but recently a friend of mine, Shaun G passed away from a rare type of Cancer of the blood vessels, at the ripe age of 28. It’s crazy how fast we can go. We’re not all invincible like we think we are. For Movember you have to shave Nov 1st and grow until Dec 1st, but here is the bad part…I’m cheating. I had already been growing a beard for a month, so instead of starting over I shaved in a beautiful handle-bar-lamb-chops-stache.

Who are you participating in Movember with?

Everyone. Everything I see I tell it to grow a mustache for Movember, for prostate cancer and in Memory of Shaun G. I tell people, men, women, children, dogs, cats, trees, squirrels, mice, porcupines, lynxs to join to cause.

How much money have you raised individually? How much has your team raised?

Me personally I’ve only raised $27 (pouty face). I’ve put in a valiant effort though, continually putting it on my Twitter, Facebook, Newschoolers, and sending emails. Our team “Shauntourage” has raised just under $15,000.

What is your personal goal for Movember?

To help raise awareness and money for prostate cancer and in loving memory of Shaun G. I’d also like to have a glorious mustache, which I’m doing quite well.

What does your lady think about that peach fuzz above your lip?

Honestly I think she loves it. I’m normally clean-shaven and right now I look like a badass biker dude without the tattoos, muscles, and Harley. I pretty sure she’s into that, aren’t all chicks? She’s even growing a mustache for Movember

How do we donate Matt Margetts?
