Copper Mountain kicked off Sunsation 2007 this past weekend with plenty of fresh snow for everyone. There wasn’t very much sun shining down on the mountain Saturday or Sunday, but it was kind enough to make an appearance for an hour or so each day. Despite the fact that there wasn’t very much sun, there was definitely sensational skiing & music. Oh, and of course plenty of Coors Light.
Being from New England I don’t get to ski powder very often. Actually, after the skiing Saturday, I’d say I had never actually skied powder before, even though I thought I had. The past 2 days in Copper has given me an understanding as to why people rave about powder so much. Amazing.
After a great day of ripping through the pow on Saturday, we headed down to the village just in time to listen to the John Popper Project. Maybe 45 minutes after Popper & his crew left the stage De La Soul came out & Sunsation was officially going off. Seriously, this event is such a great idea. Everyone got to ski great conditions and then listen to De La Soul play live, for free, while drinking pretty cheap beer for a ski resort.
On Sunday there wasn’t as much powder to be skied, but thanks to a tip from Freeskier’s Digital Dave Amirault, we got plenty of fresh tracks in some extremely sick glades. At this point, I think I should move to Colorado. During lunch everyone at Copper was entertained by the Strive Roots on the Sunsation stage, followed by Particle. Once the day of skiing was done the North Mississippi All-Stars hit the stage for the crowd.
This weekend was just the beginning of the Sunsation 2007 event. Be sure to check it out this upcoming weekend & the following weekend for some great music & great skiing. If you’re lucky the sun will even cooperate.
