Every day of ski testing last week ended with a grand ol’ après party at the luxurious Sky Hotel, located at the base of Aspen Mountain. But one party definitely outshined the rest. The house was packed on Thursday afternoon for the first annual #FreeskierFest Fashion Show, thrown poolside in conjunction with Spyder, at Sky’s 39 Degrees lounge. As the sun beamed down on the patio, DJ Naka G. provided the beats and people packed the house in anticipation of next year’s best styles and the antics that accompany any #FreeskierFest event. Carlsberg beer was on hand to quench everybody’s thirst in the VIP area as the lovely ladies of the Sky passed around delicious hour‘derves to the eclectic crowd, comprised of everybody from industry execs to ski bums to fur-donning restaurateurs.
The models for our show were plucked straight from our testing ranks as well as some Aspen locals who were just too damn good looking to be left out. They strutted around the pool showing off new wares from Orage, Scott, Armada, Descente, FD, Eider, Oakley, Flylow, Trew, Obermeyer, Strafe, Patagonia, Faction, Smartwool and Spyder, as colorful commentary was provided by Aspen’s “Digi Dave” Amirault. Putting on his own one-man fashion show as he pranced around the hot tub in a form-fitting Spyder sweater and shiney Tecnica Moon Boots, Digi didn’t waste the opportunity to hit the models with one-liners as he introduced them and their outfits. The crowd was thoroughly amused as the runway stars tried to heckle back—a lot harder when you’re not the one holding the mic.
Once the show was complete, the models all came down for a final bow and threw some impressive moves into the pool to show how well the new clothing and Sorels could hold up in wet conditions. And just when Digi Dave thought the show was over, he became the main attraction, being picked up by model Patrick “Packy” Westfeldt who then flung him into the pool. We’re not sure how Packy did it, he must be hitting the gym because Digi weighs at least 80 lbs. The crowd loved it. Unfortunately the numerous cell phones in Digi’s pockets didn’t, but we’ll let them work that out amongst themselves.
Attendees agreed that it was by far one of the most entertaining fashion shows they’d ever been to. As the sun set behind Aspen Mountain, Naka G. kept the party going while attendees and models alike relaxed by the warmth of the outdoor fire-pits. Not a bad way to end the day.
*Freeskier’s Nate Abbott was on photo assignment at the show. While the images in the gallery above give you a feel for the experience, Nate will be releasing a full gallery in the days to come—not to be missed. Stay tuned.
