The second week into the new year, the Los Angeles area of California went up in flames as hot and dry conditions mixed with intense winds to erupt into three devastating wildfires. Destroying tens of thousands of homes and other structures, as well as killing 28 people and displacing over 200,000 people during evacuations, this marks the single most destructive wildfire event since the 2018 Camp Fire. It is still unknown how many people are left homeless but according to estimates published by J.P. Morgan and reported by NBC News, insured losses from the fires may exceed $20 billion and total economic losses could exceed $50 billion.

In an effort to give back to its extended community in such a dire time, Palisades Tahoe put on a two-day Ski For a Cause event to raise funds for fire relief. On January 18 and 19 of this year, Palisades Tahoe offered Ikon Base and Ikon Session Pass holders $99 day tickets for the holiday weekend that would have otherwise been blacked out for them. The best part? 100-percent of the proceeds raised from these ticket sales went directly to the California Fire Foundation.

A non-profit organization dedicated to providing “immediate and long-term relief for communities and survivors,” the California Fire Foundation received $269,191 from the Palisades Tahoe Ski For a Cause event. Over 900 participants raised $89,397 in ticket sales and then Palisades Tahoe, in collaboration with its parent company, Alterra Mountain Co., each matched these sales down to the dollar for the grand total.

It’s easy to get caught up in the current high-pressure conditions plaguing the Western U.S. this month but it’s important to remember that in the grand scheme of life, skiing isn’t that serious. Our hearts go out to everyone who calls California home. Hats off to Palisades Tahoe, as well as other California ski resorts like Mammoth Mountain, for using its platform to contribute to the greater good.
