Kaya Turski has been an up and coming female skier and this past year was supposed to be her breakout season. Sadly, a season ending injury in San Francisco at the Icer Air sidelined her for the winter. However, turn those frowns upside down kiddos, Kaya is running down the recovery road and will be ripping up a mountain near you. Until then, Freeskier caught up with her at the beginning of her busy summer.
First, the essentials:
Name: Kaya Turski
Age: 19

Hi Kaya, How’s it going?
Its going great. Stoked on summer for sure.
How has your recovery been since your injury at Icer Air?
First few months weren’t great.. I wasn’t really psyched on anything. Then I
went to Whistler in April, skiied for a month there and that really helped
my mentality. It was really good to be back on skis and since then i’m
pretty psyched on life! I’ve been getting it together and have a trainer
now, and i’m just trying to get really strong by working out alot and
skating and stuff. Feelin good and focused.
What are your plans for the summer?
Well originally I was planning on going out to whistler to one of the camps
for a couple of weeks, but I think I might just chill here and train hard to
get as strong as I can instead of going and skiing half assed in Whistler
cause i cant go too big. Then in August, when im fully recovered, i’m going
to NZ for a couple months with the Salo peeps which is gonna be sick!!
Any good reads you could recommend for our readers (other than previous issues of the magazine)?
Da Vinci code
How has your inline skating background influenced your skiing?
Its influenced it a lot for sure. I think it helped me in all aspects.. like
the coordination, the balance, the spinning. Its really similar in the park
and its just a matter of getting used to heavier, longer things attached to
your feet and more air time.
What do you throw first in a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors?
Rock
