Decades ago, the concept of an avalanche airbag emerged as a potential lifesaver. The original idea was straightforward: if an avalanche occurred, a bag filled with air would cause you to rise to the surface of the snow, preventing burial. The early systems faced challenges, relying on cumbersome metal canisters of pressurized gas that were heavy, unreliable and restricted for air travel.
Fast forward to 2016 when canister-based airbag backpacks had improved and were being used widely across the globe, including ORTOVOX’s highly regarded AVABAG. Patrick Wesch, Product Manager of Safety for ORTOVOX, and his team were not satisfied. “In 2016, we brought the AVABAG avalanche airbag to market, which was a great product for its time. Shortly after that, in 2017, we made the decision that an electric airbag system would be the next step. For the next four-plus years, in partnership with Arc’teryx, we developed the electric LiTric system using a completely new manufacturing process as well as new material choices to create an easy-to-use and extremely lightweight product that encourages safety in the backcountry,” he noted
After setting up a development shop in ORTOVOX’s Bavarian facility, the new team–comprised of product developers from both brands–machined their parts, created molds and engineered the new LiTRIC system. The goal was clear: design an airbag that seamlessly integrated into a backpack without interfering with day-to-day usage. The result was the LiTRIC system, the lightest electronic avalanche airbag system available, weighing in at just 2.4 pounds.
The LiTRIC system features a smaller and lighter internal power system, combining a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with ultracapacitors. The Air Inflation Unit (AIU) ensures a minimum of two inflations after a full charge, even in frigid temperatures. Its USB-C port allows charging on planes or through laptops, promoting regular testing at home or in the field.
Innovations extend to the airbag balloon itself, with a two-layer system that is 25 percent lighter than the previous version. The separation of the air-holding inner bladder from the outer shell results in a sturdier and more pliable package, making it easier to repack, quicker to inflate, and boasting increased tear strength.
The modular LiTRIC airbag base is specifically designed for skiers in two back lengths, regular and short. The pack can be adapted for its intended use with two tour-specific zip-on bags in 28-liter short, 30-liter, 36-liter short and 40-liter. Complete with all the necessary attachment options for skis, snowboards, ice axes and ropes–as well as a helmet net and space for climbing skins. Additionally, avalanche rescue equipment can be stowed in a separate safety compartment. The trigger locking system is patented, intuitive and adjustable, ensuring the airbag won’t accidentally deploy. With a secure one-handed leg loop clip system, the pack is comfortable and doesn’t rely on the hip belt for strength, allowing for regular buckles that are easier to use.
Early feedback from snow professionals indicates a genuine love for the LiTRIC system, validating the years of effort and collaboration. With the new packs readily available, it’s evident that the lengthy process was worthwhile. The evolution from the early airbag concept to the refined LiTRIC system has not only transformed the ORTOVOX snow safety offerings but has set a new standard in electronic avalanche airbag technology.
