Back in 2007, ski industry veterans Felix Rioux, Doug Bishop and JF Durocher wanted to create a space to bring the freeskiing community together and so they founded the International Freeski Film Festival (iF3). iF3 was created to showcase the year’s best freeskiing movies and shine a spotlight on the current state of ski culture. Now in its 11th year, iF3 is the largest festival tour and awards show of its kind.
This year, iF3 kicks off on October 18th in Montreal, Quebec, and runs through October 20th with film screenings, special events and parties happening all weekend long. Things kick-off with the All Girls presentation on Thursday evening followed by the Urban Launch Party; thereafter, the next two days are chock-full of movie screenings from some of the finest athletes and filmmakers in the industry. The festival will culminate with its much-anticipated award ceremony on Saturday evening, which will crown a variety of amateur and professional winners in categories like “Best Cinematography,” “Discovery of the Year,” “Best Street Segment,” and “Film of the Year.”

With a reputation for being the only independent ski film awards show with a diverse, international panel of jurors, trophies are not just given for athletic performance. Artistry and production efforts that bring these ski films to life are also a large part of the judging process. For 2018, there are 22 amateur nominees, such as ParkingLot4 Productions for their series “Sick (Pow) Day,” Jessy Desjardins for his webisode series called “Partimeverything” and Jeremy Pancras’ short film “Would You,” as well as 44 professional nominees, including Matchstick Productions for All In and HOJI, Level 1 Productions for Zig Zag and Tanner Hall for his short movie, “Here After.”
Events at this year’s iF3 will take place at one of three venues across Montreal. The TAZ Skatepark and the Chalet Orage will be home to each day’s film screenings, which range from funny, short clips to five-minute street edits to jaw-dropping feature-length movies. Bain Mathieu, a club-style venue, will be host to each evening’s after party.
