We’ve been sifting through the latest and greatest ski film trailers to compile the 2024 edition of FREESKIER Trailer Time. While going through the mass or mesmerizing art, there are always a few projects that stand out. “OIWAI” from Laurent De Martin and Sampo Vallotton is one of those projects.
The two started the ski brand Simply. Recreation Club three years ago, marking a new chapter for both of them. Since then, they’ve created innovative ski designs, run community-focused ski demos and created their first film, “The Art of Recreation.” They have brought their masterful vision and talented riding to the wide world of skiing, and thankfully, they have much more in store for us.
In the teaser for their new film, “OIWAI,” which means celebration, we get a glimpse at what this dynamic duo was up to last winter. The pair voyage from their home in Switzerland to the rolling mountains of Japan in this self-described “visual manifesto.” With a mix of 16mm film and modern cameras, the beautiful cinematography matches their unique skiing perfectly. This film is shaping up to be one of our favorites this fall.
On the back of founding Simply.RC and producing their first project, The Art of Recreation, Sampo and LDM return with the second part of their visual manifesto. This time, they explore the captivating beauty of powder, taking us on a journey from their local mountains in Switzerland to the serene snow scapes of Japan, all while riding Simply.’s upcoming tools. This short movie blends 16mm film with modern cinema cameras to create a contemplative mosaic that captures Laurent and Sampo’s skiing in its most elemental form.
