Finland, a Northern European country bordered by Norway and Sweden, and the proud home to some of the weirdest sporting competitions in the world. There’s the World Wife Carrying Championships, the Hobbyhorsing World Championships and, now, there’s a swamp skiing race. In a dress. And high heels.
Spearheaded by artist Kari Tykkyläinen, the race is a celebration of the Finnish identity: madness, eroticism and sisu–or perseverance. Competitors are required to race across a swamp in nordic skis while wearing a dress, high heels and a wig. It’s not the best skiing you’ll see today but I can assure you it’ll be the weirdest you see in a while.
