The Dumont Cup, the largest pro-am freeskiing competition and only Platinum Level AFP contest in the East, is returning for the seventh consecutive year to Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine, March 27–28, 2015. Per usual, the one and only Simon Dumont will take the lead by designing this year’s course on Sunday River’s T72 terrain park.
After breaking the world record at Sunday River by airing 35.5 feet out of a 38-foot quarterpipe in 2008, Bethel, Maine-native Simon Dumont returned to create the Dumont Cup in 2009 as an opportunity for young and rising East Coast slopestyle skiers to gain exposure. Over the course of the two day event, amateurs compete side-by-side against the professionals in hopes of earning AFP points, prizes, and ultimate bragging rights.
Though initially intended to be a regional event, competitors from all over the United States, throughout Canada and even Europe, regularly compete for a chance at the coveted Cup. Olympic medalists Gus Kenworthy and Nick Goepper have both claimed the top spot on the podium at the Dumont Cup on multiple occasions. To date, the Dumont Cup is the only slopestyle event to be awarded Platinum status by the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP), putting it on par with the biggest slopestyle competitions across the globe.
The 2015 Dumont Cup qualifiers begin Friday, March 27, and the finals will go down on Saturday, March 28. Competitors must register through AFPworldtour.com. Plenty of cash and some highly coveted AFP points are up for grabs. For more information on the Dumont Cup, visit DumontCup.com.
