Joe Schuster is making his X Games Real Ski Backcountry debut this year. Formerly known for his sleeping antics, the Super Proof shredder will certainly have you on the edge of your seat while you watch his 2014 entry. Where did you spend your time shooting for your video?
Pretty much the entire video was shot in Whistler. I have a couple shots in there from a trip to the interior of British Columbia, but mainly Whistler.
How do you feel about the format?
I think it’s great, it allows people an entire winter to come up with the best stuff they can get rather then just two runs like you would have in a normal contest. As far as the People’s Choice award goes, it pretty much just comes down to an online popularity contest, which is fine because the real top three are determined by a legit judging panel.
Who were you filming with?
I shot the video with Brandon Kelly, my good friend and filmer for Super Proof. I also have a couple shots in there from Tyler Hamlet as well.
Is there less pressure because of the format being a video entry?
Yes and no. There is less pressure because it allows you way more time to submit your video, but there is still a lot of pressure. You don’t want anything in there to be half-ass or look bad, so there is still that pressure to make sure you put out the best footage you possibly can.
Is there a trick you missed that you wished you’d gotten while shooting?
Yeah, I think I miss some shots every single year that I film. I’m really happy with my video, but I always want more. That’s why I keep filming and making new video parts—I always want to keep pushing myself and getting more out of my skiing.
Who do you see as your biggest competition in the contest?
I think everyone in this contest has potential to win. I have no clue what anyone really got up to this winter so I’m not really to sure, but I think Sammy [Carlson] and Dane [Tudor] are definitely going to have some pretty mind blowing videos.
Do you think you will get more chicks because of this?
Sh*t, I sure hope so! [Laughs]
If you win, what’s your plan for the 25k? Vegas?
Well I was just in Vegas a couple days ago so I don’t need to go back there for a while. [Laughs]. In reality, if I get anywhere on the podium I’ll probably just use that money to buy a new sled.
