You’re probably staring at the featured image above and thinking, “It won’t be long until that’s me.” But for the fine folks at Silverton Mountain, that is the current reality. Colorado has been hit with a massive October snowstorm over the last 48 hours, with totals reaching over two feet in the state’s southern mountain ranges.

Areas like Silverton Mountain and Wolf Creek saw the brunt of the storm, with the latter even making the urgent announcement that they will be starting operations on October 22! This marks the first major resort in Colorado (and in North America) to open for the 2024/25 winter.

But it wasn’t just the San Juan’s and the neighboring mountain ranges that have been hit with this early start to winter. Crested Butte and Aspen Snowmass got a taste of the action, and farther north along the I-70 corridor, resorts like Loveland and Arapahoe Basin have also been embracing the cold and shaking with excitement.

This early season anticipation can be nothing short of elating. Personally, I got butterflies swarming my stomach just looking at those deep turns! Make sure to keep an eye on the avalanche forecast as early-season conditions snowpacks can be unstable as more precipitation piles up.
