Editor’s Picks: Skis

Take a close-up look at the gear we’re stoked about for Winter 2024-25.

Atomic Backland 109 & Atomic Backland 108 W

Crafted for peak performance, the Atomic Backland 109 and 108 W elevate freeride touring. By using less fiberglass and more wood in the core, these skis trend toward the lighter side to provide relatively pain-free ascents. Don’t be fooled though, they still excel when descending intense lines or in variable conditions. The addition of a lightweight HRZN 3D (beveled and convex) tip ensures excellent float in deep snow while also reducing swing weight for easier handling. Moreover, the ski embraces a lower-impact construction, reducing CO2 equivalent emissions by 26 percent. For freeride-focused touring, it’s a dynamic and environmentally conscious choice.

Blizzard Anomaly 88

Crafted to excel across a wide variety of conditions, the Anomaly 88 ski is a go-to for unpredictable days. Featuring Blizzard’s redesigned Trueblend wood core, which is strongest underfoot and gets progressively softer towards the ends of the ski, and a new metal layup that breaks up the power of two full Titanal sheets across three layers, this ski handles bumps with ease, carves groomers effortlessly and is ready to seek out pow stashes in the woods. Versatile and dynamic, the Anomaly 88 is the perfect companion to ensure there are no boring days at the resort.

Blizzard Black Pearl 88

The Black Pearl series isn’t just about construction or geometry; it’s about the women who have made it one of the best-selling ski collections of all time. These women prioritize confidence, strength, fun, and forgiveness in skiing, and the Black Pearl 88 exceeds expectations. The updated women’s specific TrueBlend wood core, which uses a combination of Beech underfoot and Poplar at the tips and tails to provide a smooth flex, is blended with multiple layers of metal. This unique layup results in a reliable, balanced ski that empowers women to conquer steep trails and technical terrain effortlessly.

Black Diamond Impulse Ti Collection

Black Diamond’s new freeride Impulse Ti skis have been redesigned and redefined to handle everything from big mountain lines to technical descents to pre-work dawn patrols. Whether you’re charging in the backcountry or arcing down the front side of your home resort, you’ll appreciate the added Titanal sheet for its power transmission, dampness and stability. Offered in four waist widths (98, 104, 112, 114), with women-specific versions in the 98 and 104, there’s a model to suit just about everyone. Select your preferred size and get ready to charge through hard snow or surf deep pow.

La Sportiva Sorriso Ski

At 110mm underfoot and built with minimal camber and rockered tips and tails, the lightweight Sorriso is built to surf the backcountry–just like its open ocean-inspired graphics imply. The secret to keeping its weight down lies within its X45-laminated Paulownia wood core. Take these freetour-inspired boards for a long walk to your secret stash deep in the woods or up a large alpine face and you’ll have plenty of energy to enjoy the descent. The La Sportiva team found that the addition of D30®, an innovative material used in crash protection pieces, helped eliminate chatter and improve overall performance.

Head Kore 93 & Head Kore 91 W

The legacy of Head’s Kore collection shines bright in the 93 and 91 W models. The sandwich construction blends Graphene, two carbon layers, and a Karuba/Poplar wood core, creating the ultimate tool for those who ride the resort but also enjoy the backcountry. The tip and tail rocker, specifically tailored for each model, allows you to float effortlessly in soft snow while promoting smooth turn initiation in firm conditions. The chamfered top edge improves durability while also providing a playful feel. Take this proven all-mountain tool into the backcountry for a sunrise tour, or head to the resort to arc clean lines down fresh corduroy.

Armada ARV 94 & Armada ARW 94

The evolution of the fun-filled ARV/ARW series continues, with the latest iteration of the 94mm waist width models showcasing new tech and construction. The three-dimensionally injected sidewall has a mechanical bond between the sidewall and core, resulting in increased edge hold and a more durable overall package. The Poplar core with Ash binding inserts provides a smooth flexing platform that begs for buttering and pressing park lines and casual side hits. With graphics that feature the work of David Alabo and Ada Zielinska, you’ll be showcasing cutting-edge, contemporary art in the lift line and around the mountain.

Liberty Scope Ski Series

Jump into a world of playful and performance-driven designs built for the modern freerider with Liberty’s Scope collection of skis. Whether you’re floating through powder on the Scope 110, charging the chop on the 104 or carving groomers with the 94, these skis will feel at home. Lightweight construction, combined with tip and tail rocker and an energetic core profile, ensures a good time regardless of the snow conditions. Featuring Poplar and Ash cores with phenolic composite plates for stability, these skis provide easy flex, quiet precision and seamless turns. It’s your ticket to a sick day of shredding.

Elan Ripstick 96 & Ripstick 94 W

The vision for the new Ripstick 96 and 94 W was to deliver a high-performance, hard-charging ski that preserves the nimble essence from previous iterations. The wood core, in combination with strategic carbon and flax additives, makes for an energetic and powerful ride that is naturally damp. The asymmetrical profile integrates both rocker and camber into dedicated left and right skis so that your inside edge maximizes grip and stability while the outside edge provides forgiveness, turning ease and smooth transitions. No matter the conditions–fresh corduroy, a few inches of powder, or unpredictable chop–you can count on them for consistently solid performance.

Rocky Mountain Underground Zephyr 88

The Zephyr 88 from Rocky Mountain Underground is an all-mountain carver’s dream, with a 132mm tip that will also allow you to blast through powder and chunder. The all-new model boasts a poplar wood core with titanal stringers, giving it a nice blend of stiffness and balanced flex where you need it. Early rise in the tip and tail provides maneuverability, while camber underfoot allows you to roll this weapon on its edge with ease and confidence. Throw the durable ABS sidewalls into the equation, and you have a ski that will perform day in and day out.

Nordica Santa Ana 97

The redesigned Nordica Santa Ana 97 calls to the all-mountain female rippers with a unique construction that brings a variety of elements into play. Nordica has paired both a wood core and a rubbery, elastomer Pulse core with a sheet of thin “terrain-specific” metal, yielding a playful freeride feel that doesn’t skimp on stability With a versatile 97mm waist width, it’s built to be useful when conditions are low tide but can also perform when the flakes are falling.

Nordica Enforcer 99

Continuing with Nordica’s theme of fresh designs, the Enforcer 99 gets a makeover for 2024-25. Similar to the Santa Ana, the new Enforcer build pairs a Pulse core with two sheets of metal tucked in 2mm on each edge. The all new shape construction and sizes give the skier more versatility and the ability to feel comfortable charging at high speeds on firm snow while also having the playfulness to make softer conditions incredibly enjoyable.
