[WATCH] Here’s a behind the scenes look at how 686 created its revolutionary Hydrastash jacket

When 686 released it’s GLCR Hydrastash Reservoir Jacket at the annual snowsports trade show, Outdoor Retailer, the industry went nuts. Frankly, so did the FREESKIER crew, and we immediately handed 686’s designers a “Best of Show” award for the jacket’s purposeful innovation. From the outside, this winter jacket has the same appeal as any of 686’s other offerings: minimalist style complete with all the technical features necessary to get you through Mother Nature’s worst storms; however, along the lower back inside the jacket, there’s a reservoir that holds 25 ounces of water to keep you hydrated all day long.

“The interesting thing is that we design apparel,” says 686 Founder and Creative Director Mike West. “This process was quite different, to the point that it added aspects of engineering, industrial design, scientific research. There were probably well over 100 iterations of this over the past couple of years.”

In the video featured above, take a comprehensive, behind the scenes look at 686’s latest innovation: the Hydrastash reservoir. Featuring conversations from 686’s aforementioned founder, Director of Innovation Michi Bret—who was one of the hands-on designers of the project,—and Brent Sandor, V.P. of Marketing, this glimpse into the company’s process is shot beautifully and provides unmatched insight as to how this jacket will undoubtedly change the game.

Gear Review from the 2019 Resort Guide:

Brand new for 2018-19 is 686’s patent-pending Hydrastash built-in hydration system. 686 has successfully integrated a 25-ounce reservoir into its outerwear that holds as much water as your favorite Nalgene—and it’s comfortable to wear, too. In addition to keeping you quenched, the jacket has a 20K/15K waterproof/breathability rating, which will keep you dry and prevent overheating. On bitter cold days, strategically placed insulation in the body, arms and hood ensure you’ll stay nice and toasty. Fully taped seams, DWR treatment, underarm vents, wrist gaiters, a goggle stash pocket and audio compatibility complete this decked-out jacket.
