On Movie Monday, FREESKIER brings you free movies from the wide world of skiing. With a mix of old and new, this is where you can find your weekly dose of freeski history, adrenaline and cinema mastery all in one.

Bringing you important pieces from freeskiing’s past is what the Movie Monday series is all about. This week is a prime example of exactly that. “Breathe” is a film that represents a paradigm shift in skiing; a moment in time when the sport had truly stepped into a new era, and changed from what was to what is. Cinematographer and director Scott Gaffney has been at the forefront of the sport for over 25 years, and thanks to him and a handful of others, we can see this incredible slice of the past.

When “Breathe” was shot in 1997, it was a testament to the talent that had emerged over the previous years. As Gaffney mentioned in his opening monologue, there were (and still are) plenty of unknown rippers out there, some of which the crew met on their travels. The location list is extensive, featuring shots from Alaska, Colorado, California, France, Italy and Canada. In addition to the remarkable locations, several of which had rarely been shot before at the time, the crew of skiers featured is comparable to the 1992 Dream Team. Jonny Moseley, Gordy Peifer, Robb Gaffney and Chris Davenport are a few of the legendary names you’ll see here. Thanks to Scott Lindgren and Rush Sturges for their help in digitizing this film and making it available for all to watch.
