Creating art can come with an overwhelming pressure to produce nothing short of the best. Even if we don’t realize it on the surface, nobody wants to put time and energy into something just for the end result to… suck. We tell ourselves that it’s okay to fail and that it’s necessary to fail, and both of these things are absolutely true. But still, the goal of that failure is to get somewhere; to realize potential and produce something we can be proud of, something that has Quality.
But this drive brings unexpected consequences. It can lead to an overbearing or injected narrative. We’re all guilty of this in one way or another. I know I am. This is evident in ski films, where there seems to be an abundance of flicks peppered with plots that are, in a way, unnecessary. But “SPLIFF” is not one of those movies. Dylan Siggers and Liam Morgan set out to make, “a ski movie [that makes] you want to go out and make your own ski movie. No helicopters, no superstars, no epic monologue behind the moments.” That’s exactly what they did, and you’ll find zero complaints here.
This is not the team’s first rodeo. Siggers and Morgan have spent years refining their styles both in front and behind the lens. Filming throughout the movie was done by numerous people, all of which crushed it, but the complete project was composed by Siggers himself. And rest assured there is no shortage of grunge rock or switch landings. “SPLIFF” is an excellent reminder that a phenomenal product can come in simplified forms.
There doesn’t need to be a massive lesson spelled out at the end. The work can speak for itself. With another incredible winter right around the corner, we hope this project will hit home for you too. Because it’s just about time to grab a camera and hit the mountain with your own friends. Or leave the camera at home. As long as you’re Spreading Positive Loving Intimacy For Friends, the rest will fall into place.
