Press Release, Sunday River:

Registration for one of Sunday River Resort’s 50 highly coveted couple spots for the 15th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship opens on Monday, August 4 at noon. The grand prize? Fame and a small fortune of beer, equal to the wife’s weight, plus five times her weight in cash.

“Registration spots sell out every year,” Caroline Ochtera, Events Marketing Manager for Sunday River Resort, says. “We give any regional wife carrying champions, world champions, and past North American champions, free entry into our event, which is on top of the 50 couple spots that we register, so you know that there will be a mix of serious and not-so-serious competitors.”

Couples who make the registration cutoff on Monday, August 4 will then go on to compete in the 15th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championships at Sunday River on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Registration takes place online at sundayriver.com and costs $50 per couple.

Based upon Finnish folklore and modern World Wife Carrying Championship rules, couples do not actually have to be married to compete, but do have to be comprised of a man and woman. For the North American Wife Carrying Championship, both participants must also be of legal drinking age.

Also based on Finland’s World Wife Carrying event is the North American Wife Carrying Championship’s 278-yard long course, complete with obstacles.

During the North American Wife Carrying Championship, couples can expect to maneuver everything from log hurdles and sand traps to a steep mountainside and a man-made pond.

To determine the North American Wife Carrying Champion, all couples compete two-by-two for time, and the two couples with the fastest times then race against one another for the championship title and prizes, including money and beer.
