After an eight-month winter season, Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin ski resort has announced that it will be officially closing Sunday, June 22. A-Basin has been apart of a record breaking 2013/14 ski and snowboard season in Colorado, but as they say, all good things must come to an end. The ski area will be open and accessible for skiers and snowboarders Friday, Saturday and Sunday (June 20, 21, 22) from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. So, if you happen to be in Colorado this weekend, be sure to get the goods at A-Bay while you still can. Eight months after kicking off Colorado’s record-breaking 2013-14 ski and ride season, Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin) announced that the mountain will close for winter operations on Sunday, June 22, 2014. The ski area will be open for lift-served skiing and riding this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday (June 20-22) from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Arapahoe Basin was the first ski area to open in Colorado on October 13, 2013. Over the course of this season, A-Basin received over 440 inches of snow, allowing it to extend the season past the initial June 1, 2014, closing date. February was the snowiest month for the ski area this season with over 90 inches of recorded snowfall. On Sunday, A-Basin will have operated for 241 days, including the three “bonus” extension weekends. While not the longest season on record, this season stands as one of the busiest and most successful for A-Basin.
“From our October 13 opening to the 6th Alley Bar & Grill remodel, to those extraordinary mid-season powder days to the summer skiing – this has certainly been one of the most amazing ski seasons Arapahoe Basin has ever had,” said Alan Henceroth, A-Basin’s Chief Operating Officer.
Notable on-mountain improvements this season included a $1 million renovation to the 6th Alley Bar & Grill, the ski area’s popular après spot. In May 2014, A-Basin received the prestigious NSAA/Ski Magazine Golden Eagle Award for excellence in its waste-reduction program which focused on recycling and composting, as well as guest education. Currently, A-Basin is in the process of constructing a new Kids’ Center for its snowsports students, and expects that project to be completed in early 2015. By installing solar energy in this new building as well as other environmentally-friendly amenities, A-Basin remains committed to protecting its special mountain environment for generations to come.
Although summer is in full swing, A-Basin has already focused on creating low-cost lift ticket and pass products for next season. Arapahoe Basin will release its 2014-15 season pass and multi-day lift ticket products on July 1, 2014. Ticket packs will include a version of the ski area’s popular Elevation pass as well as a transferable lift ticket pack. Stay tuned to arapahoebasin.com for more information.
The Basin doesn’t shut down just because the ski season is over. From July 5 to August 31, the 6th Alley Bar & Grill will be open for lunch Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Arapahoe Basin’s summer events season kicks off July 13 with Yoga on the Mountain at Black Mountain Lodge. Other events include the Summit Challenge Trail Run, a mid-mountain BBQ, and several dining events at Black Mountain Lodge.
