X Games 16 may have kicked off yesterday, but today the event kicked into high gear. Last night the slopestyle competitors got on the course and today the Superpipe competitors did the same. A mostly sunny and warm day welcomed the competitors. The weather was likely a nice change from some of the temperatures they endured in Killington last week. So with good weather, sled laps and more media than you can shake a stick at, the skiers tested it out. Here is what a couple of the riders had to say:

The X Games superpipe is quite storied and has been a beacon to which many legendary pipe skiers have flocked. CR Johnson and Candide Thovex battled it out in 2003. Simon Dumont and Tanner Hall flip-flopped gold medals for years, starting in 2004. Peter Olenick set a world record for height in 2010. And the late and universally loved Sarah Burke took home four gold medals here.

While the Superpipe may not change much year-to-year for the casual observer (or even seasoned journalist), the little nuances that make a pipe great have been met this year. Practice started out with people slowly finding their superpipe legs. But within a matter of runs, guys like Wing Tai Barrymore, Torin Yater-Wallace, Kevin Rolland and David Wise were boosting. Below, follow Jossi Wells as he takes a casual run through the U-ditch.

A who's-who of Superpipe talents made the trek to showcase their skills, starting on Friday evening, for men's elimination rounds. The ladies have a finals-only, which will go down Saturday midday, with the men's finals finishing shortly thereafter. Will Kevin Rolland make it a third straight Winter X gold (five if you count Euro X)? Can Simon Dumont reclaim his throne? Will local boy Torin Yater-Wallace make it two years in a row on the podium? Will new blood stand atop the winner's stage? Only time will tell. Stay tuned to Freeskier.com this week to find out.
