We don’t know what it is about FREESKIER’s ski test and good storms, but every year there seems to be divine intervention from Mother Nature and this year is—by the grace of the ski gods—no exception. After a warm and sunny first day testing the narrowest skis of the bunch on groomers and character-building bumps at Vail Mountain, the clouds rolled in just after last chair and dropped 10 inches of fresh snow by the next morning to warrant pulling out the fat skis.
While Colorado typically sees dry, cold-smoke powder, this storm came in warm with extra moisture content typical of the Pacific Northwest, which made for incredible sending conditions on skis 108 mm and wider. From top to bottom, front and backside, no secret stash was safe from our crew of frothy testers. Deep turns were had, cliffs were dropped and there were more than a few punch fronts—all in the name of testing next year’s best powder skis.
