Beartooth Basin Ski Area is a summer skiing destination that is off the beaten path. Nestled in the Beartooth Mountains, which run between the Montana / Wyoming boarder, the resort sits on one of the most scenic mountain passes in the world; the Beartooth Highway. With snow banks usually stacking over 10 feet high, the road remains closed in the winter, and the ski area only fires up its diesel generators in the summer. It’s played host to skiers dating back to the 1950s, with a storied history of passion taking shape ever since. But this summer, things are changing. Beartooth Basin Ski Area is officially for sale.

“It’s bittersweet,” said Beartooth Basin’s management group when FREESKIER inquired about the sale. “The current ownership group has poured their hearts into this place since 2002, making many lasting memories and friendships along the way. It’s always been a labor of love for us. However, we are excited about the prospect of seeing Beartooth Basin go to a good home.”

When asked about requirements for buyers, they said there are no specifics that they’re looking for. “We are entertaining all serious offers,” they told us. “Ideally, we’d like to see the new owners maintain the current relationship with Red Lodge and the greater Montana ski community, and commit to bringing the ski operation to its highest potential.”

While the sale is very recent and there are currently no developments in prospective buyers, we can only hope that the legendary Poma lifts and snowcats fall into good hands. This tiny oasis serves as a reminder that skiing and the subsequent community can thrive with only the essentials. FREESKIER will keep you informed as this story develops. Long live Beartooth Basin.
