Freeskier – November 2002 Photo by @mattiasfredrikssonphotography Anyone who remembers the early days of @freeskiermagazine will know that for the first 5 years of the magazine's existence they only ran portraits on the cover. I didn't have a strong opinion on this one way or the other, but I understood they were trying to be different in a magazine rack loaded with ski rags. When my turn came, they sent me on a Euro road trip with @windstedt photographer Mattias Fredriksson and writer @patrickcraw Conditions were good and we had a blast. I wasn't sure how Mattias wanted to put together the portrait shot, but one night after dinner he got me to put on a black T-shirt and we went out into the back yard of the house we were staying at in St Anton. Being one of the only pro skiers who was married at the time, they asked me to hold my left hand up so my ring could be seen. I tried my hardest to look cool and this is what we got. The cover title line of the story was somewhat prophetic. The next year of my career was the best I'd ever skied – my segment in @mspfilms 'Ski Movie 3: The Front Line' was the only one I was ever fully happy with and I managed to pick up 'Best Male Skier' at the Powder Awards the following season. #skiiing #coverstories

Episode 13 – The Landry Line off Pyramid Peak is live! (link in bio). This season in Colorado when from historically dangerous avalanche conditions to suddenly stable and exceptionally filled in. Keeping tabs on the weather and rapidly improving avalanche conditions, @bjarnesalen and I bolted to Aspen and within a day of being in town were setting out for my first ever ski tour in Colorado to what many consider the test piece is ski mountaineering in the Rockies. Steep, exposed and damn fun, possibly my favorite skiing of the year happened on this line. Episode dedicated to @scramuelcoffey.

You ever go into the mountains to just play? After reading a recent article in @sisumagazine that question made me think. I’ve always held true to skiing being my biggest passion first, then my occupation, but I promised myself a long time ago that I would never let any job ruin the passion that I feel and it never has. I love every second that I get to spend outside. It’s an addiction and I think it’s so valuable to truly just play. No pressures, no commitments to summits, no self judgement, just pure enjoyment, expression, and a lot of good snacks. While working on Originate, there’s not a lot of time left idle in a season and most days are spent with a camera. It’s rare that I get days in without a camera to be honest. I cherish those days, but keeping in mind that mountains are for playing, helps make every day feel light. To be clear, film days often feel like this, but there are certainly times when I put pressure on myself. Then I have to remember that I am the only one putting pressure on myself. I hold the keys, so keep it light and just play and the best is yet to come until you enter that mindset. This day on Shasta was just that. There was no feeling of ticking it off the list of the 50s, it was more of a long walk and good hang with your friends and that is a beautiful thing. My most favorite way to hang in the best playground…the mountains. » thanks for the ???? @bjarnesalen !!! ????⚡️????
