The 2016-17 ski season marks Silverton Mountain’s 15th anniversary as one of North America’s most unique ski areas. To celebrate, Silverton, located in Colorado’s rough and rugged San Juan Mountains, has extended its guided operating season for 2016-17.

The four-day-per-week (open Thursday through Sunday) guided skiing season—where groups of about eight skiers are led by an experienced guide into some of the best terrain and stashes spread across Silverton’s 1,819 acres of lift-accessed skiing—runs from December 29, 2016 through March 26, 2017, a few days longer than in prior seasons. In the past Silverton operated on a weekend-only basis during the early season, but the move to a Thursday through Sunday schedule from the get-go allows them to prolong the 2016-17 season. The move celebrates the ski area’s 15th anniversary, but is also a response to guest comments.

“Based on feedback from our guests, it is clear that skiers and snowboarders enjoy more of the mountain and find better snow in the guided skiing experience,” said Aaron Brill, founder and CEO of Silverton. “As a result, we decided to offer more guided days during our 15th anniversary season and to focus unguided skiing on the spring when the snowpack is more conducive to self-guiding Silverton Mountain’s terrain.”

The unguided season, in which guests are on their own to safely access Silverton’s terrain, runs from March 31 through April 9, 2017, a period when Colorado’s snowpack generally begins to consolidate.
