Shredding Squaw Valley: We Found the Snow

Shredding Squaw Valley: We Found the Snow

I had never been to Squaw before. I know, I know, slap me on the wrist. I’ve been waiting my whole life to get here, and luckily for me, the snow decided to show up the same day I did.

My rental car is currently under so much snow that I might have to get it towed back down the Valley. Out my hotel room window, I can see the snow falling hard (sometimes it looks like it’s snowing up). Rumors are it’s been snowing 2 inches an hour all day, and there’s no end in sight. If the amount of snow that billowed into my camera bag every time I opened it is any indication, the rumors are true.

I came up here on Friday to get some turns in before the Dew Tour starts on Wednesday in nearby Northstar. I had no idea I’d be claiming best powder of the year only halfway into my trip.

I was joined today by locals Michelle Parker, Ingrid Backstrom and Squaw legend Jimbo Morgan. We went all over the mountain, up the Funitel (the gondi), up KT-22 (one of the most famous lifts in the country) and stole some secret stashes up Red Dog. Riding with this crew has meant fresh tracks on every single run. While most people skirt around the edges of the pow stashes, these guys know where the goods are and I have to admit it’s a struggle to keep up as they shred down chutes and gullies they know like the back of their hand.

I’m not going to give away any secrets right now, since I don’t want to walk out the hotel and get shot by the locals sipping beer and sake over at the Chamois, but check out the Squaw Destinations article in this coming year’s Freeskier and I’ll let you in on a tip or two.

Huge shoutout right now to Savannah at Squaw, the Creek Resort, Junior, Sam, Mave and Dusty at the Chamois and all the rest of the locals who have made me feel truly at home. This place is unbelievable and if you’ve never been, get on a plane to Reno right now. Just be sure to get a 4-wheel-drive car!
