Shane McConkey Reflections: 1969-2009

Shane McConkey Reflections: 1969-2009

Shane McConkey’s life ran much deeper than most people ever saw in his movie segments and magazine photos. Yes, he was an “Extreme” athlete (although he passionately hated the word “Extreme”). He took part in stunts on and off the hill that most people would never dream of attempting. At the peak of his career, he was as big a star in skiing as Jeremy Jones is in snowboarding, Kelly Slater in surfing, or Travis Pastrana in moto. He inspired thousands with his abilities and his whacky antics, exemplified by his ironically cocky character, saucer boy.

But away from AK peaks and massive cliff walls, Shane was just as extraordinary, as a father, a friend, an advocate for skiing and a man who loved all aspects of life. And that’s the side of him we aim to show over the next 22 pages. We enlisted the help of those he was closest to and asked each person to tell us what Shane meant to them, how he affected their lives, and what impact he had on skiing. This collection of remembrances has deepened our understanding of Shane’s remarkable life, and we hope that it does the same for you.
