It’s every skier’s worst nightmare to be sitting on a chairlift when it suddenly detaches. For one unfortunate skier at Attitash Mountain Resort, that nightmare became a reality this past weekend.
According to NBC Boston, one man was injured on Sunday when the chair he was sitting on detached from the ski area’s Flying Bear lift and fell about 20 feet to the ground. Emergency personnel were called just after noon EST to report the incident. Witnesses state the man was conscious and walking after the fall but ski patrol assisted in getting him off the mountain and to the hospital to treat his non-life-threatening injuries.
It is presumed that a mechanical failure caused the chair to dislodge from the lift but the incident is still under investigation and the name of the man involved in the accident has not been released. There were no other injuries reported and all other passengers on the lift at the time were unloaded at the top like normal. The Flying Bear lift remains closed while the investigation continues, which will include a full review of the records of all past inspections.
