The J5 Junkyard Slopestyle went down at Waterville Valley, NH on March 22, 2008. The Junkyard theme was in full effect with a flat box perched upon two huge cable spools, a rhythm section complete with two mini quarter pipes with lift chairs doubling as hand rails and a small transfer/gap jump with a cement mixer in the middle. As the competitors whipped through the triple jump line into the jib section it made for some hair raising and spontaneous skiing.
As the day got going, the standouts stood out. During the 1 hour AM jam spectators saw some amazing style with switch 3’s, Rodeo 5’s, switch 7 tails and total annihilation of the junkyard jibs. For the ladies WV team ripper Tiffany Davenport was throwing down a 360 safety grab off the last jump and killing the flat box. Heather Thomas our other lady competitor was very smooth in the rhythm section showing her skills on and off the custom junkyard features. For the AM men it was Brendon Wall literally spinning to win, with a switch 3 off the first jump into a 5 on the second and finishing it off with a switch cork 9 tail on the last jump. Collin Sirois was also showing what he was made of on all three jumps and the gap/transfer jump over the cement mixer.
Once the AM’s finished up it was onto the PRO division where there were so much trickery it was hard for the judges to keep up. Mark Pomykato threw down some of the most stylish runs of the contest that included a front flip off of the flat box. Matt Pothier was also showing his junkyard skills with a Rodeo 5 nose off jump 3 and smooth 270 on variations on the flat box. Though it was clear to all who were watching that Nick Martini was straight killing it, throwing a picture perfect switch 1080 mute off jump 3, Rodeo 5 japan off jump 2 and destroying every jib in the junkyard.
The judges also had another task besides just judging. They were on the lookout for the best trick thrown during the contest. The reason being New England Skydive hooked it up with a skydive for 2, which was up for grabs. A young Canadian lad by the name of Mike Ness threw down a layback slide to 360 off the junkyard flat box, which wowed the judges and sealed up best trick of the contest.
