New lifts in New England

Here’s a flurry of ski news to keep you cool till snow flies. Jay Peak was bought by long time President Bill Stenger….this is good news as the resort is now US owned – after 3 decades of Canadian control by Mont Saint Sauver’s conglomerate. Stenger put Jay on the map by opening huge acreage of glade skiing which has become Jay’s calling card. Stenger and his private investors plan to dump upwards of $100 mill on new lifts, snowmaking, and an on-mountain hotel. Exciting news for this northern Vermont resort that typically gets dumped on with about 400 inches of “Jay-cloud” snow.

Sunday River’s new Chondola is churning along; the installation of this hybrid lift from South Ridge to North Peak will offer skiers and riders a choice – a 6-pack chair ride or the comfortable confines of an 8-passenger gondola. All on the same cable – cool! Ramped up snowmaking, night skiing, and a new North Paw trail cap off the $14 mill in capital at The River thanks to Boyne.

Killington gets a new lift to the tune of $8 mill, replacing the old Skye Peak Quad will make for better access between Bear Mountain and Skye Peak. The new Skye Peak Express reduces ride time from 13 to 5 minutes. It’s been a decade since the Big K has seen a new lift. Killington will celebrate 50 years this season.
