Editor’s Note: Mt Hutt has rescheduled opening day to June 13, 2025
It’s been a historic start to winter 2025 at Mt. Mutt, New Zealand. A massive storm earlier this month dropped about 1.2 meters on the ski area, which is approximately 3.9 feet for our friends here in the States. After getting the mountain safety team up to the mountain, dropping a few bombs and doing laps in the helicopter to inspect the scene, the crew seemed optimistic.
“If the weather keeps playing nice and that base is as good as it looks, well… we might just bring opening day forward,” the ski area said in an Instagram post showing the initial inspection. The optimism was not misplaced, as cold temps have held and more snow appears to be on the way.
After a few days of anticipation, the resort posted again, showing that they had cleared the road and allowed their snow cats to return onto the hill. The road up to Mt. Hutt can be treacherous to say the least, and having enough snow to let the cats crawl around is no small feat either.
Finally, we recently got the official word: Mt. Hutt will be opening on Saturday, May 31, if all goes according to plan. This is the earliest the resort has opened since 2009, marking a historic milestone for the South Island ski destination.
Mt. Hutt plans to operate through June 2. They’ll open again on June 7 and 8, and then start spinning lifts seven days a week starting on June 14. Time to start exploring day and season pass options!
Last year, we saw incredible amounts of snow cake the mountains of Valle Nevado, Chile. Perhaps another stellar winter is headed for the Southern Hemisphere, this time to New Zealand. Only time will tell, but we’re as excited as can be about this early good news.
