Momentum Ski Camps Summer Splashdown

Momentum Ski Camps Summer Splashdown

Sun, skiing, spins, splashing and plenty of SPF were all prime ingredients that went into the first Momentum Ski Camp Summer Splashdown. The Whistler water ramps hosted the event and over 200 people came out to witness the festivities. After hibernating for the past couple days the sun came out in full force and beat down on the likes of Justin Dorey, Mike Henitiuk, AJ Kemppainen, Mike Riddle, Colby West, Matt Margettes, Joe Schuster, Josh Bibby and more. After applying lots of sunscreen, turning the bubbles on, and handing over the microphone to Mr. Luke Van Valin the all-new event got underway.

The Whistler Water Ramps Pre Contest

Unlike your usual contest, the Summer Splashdown offered up a unique format where campers competed side by side with the pros in three different categories: fun jump, best trick and spin to win. Judging today’s contest was a panel of three that is more famous than the Kardasihan sisters. Sarah Burke, Alex Bilodeau (2010 Olympic mogul gold medalist) and the Godfather himself, Mike Douglas — who started the New Canadian Airforce and constructed the D-Spin on the very same water ramps — put pencils to paper to score the event.

The Amazing Judges

In the fun category we saw everything from “elbow drops”, to quad screaming seamens, to flatspins with some large spread eagles. The fun jumps set the stage for the rest of the day by creating an environment where riders were having a good time and were full of smiles even if they were smashing their faces into the bubbly water.

Justin Dorey Does Work

After getting a few jumps under their belt, the professionals started to throw down and step it up. The water ramp saw a plethora of doubles and big spins. Justin Dorey spent much of the day throwing unnatural double spins, while Mike Henitiuk even threw down a triple backflip. However, local Canadian resident Mike Riddle ousted the rest of the competition throwing huge doubles and two dub 1620’s. “This was awesome, a nice change from the ordinary contest and it is just nice to come out and have fun with your friends,” Riddle commented after leaving the contest crowned Splashdown champion.

Mike Riddle Gets Ready to Drop in on Victory

With the first Splashdown in the bag, it can be considered an enormous success and just another contest that allows riders to successfully push the envelope and progress in a safe environment. Check out momentumskicamps.com for more info on the Splashdown event and other summer camp activities.
