It’s been a wild start to winter 2025 for Mt Hutt, New Zealand. After announcing a historically early opening day, the resort was hit with several days of warm temperatures, causing the accumulated snow to rapidly deplete. But things are changing for the better on the South Island.

A large storm made landfall this weekend, bringing with it ample precipitation and cold temperatures. “90cm… sounds about right. Name a better sight to wake up to… We’ll wait,” touted Mt Hutt on Instagram the morning of June 7. Open Snow reports the ski area has received over two feet of snow in the last five days.

And that’s hardly the end of it. The storm is set to continue for the coming days, and after a brief break of 48 hours or less, the cold, wet weather is projected to return on June 12 and 13 with over a foot of snow in store.

Though the previous weeks have brought a roller coaster of emotions for New Zealand skiers, with temperatures swinging dramatically and forecasts bringing mixed news, this storm is a great sign for what’s to come. Hopefully consistent cold temperatures and good, moist snow will create a solid base to help get ski season up and rolling in this corner of the Southern Hemisphere.

If you’re coming to us from New Zealand or planning a trip, it’s worth noting that Mt Hutt is currently running several pass deals, including the Three Peak Pass, which includes access to Ski Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Mt Hutt, as well as an Ikon Base Pass. There are several variations of passes available, so click here to learn more.

This area is home to incredible freeride terrain, and it’s always amazing to see what New Zealand riders like Ben Richards and Jess Hotter get up to as the season ramps up. Stay tuned for more from the South!
