Mammoth Lakes, CA Buried in Two Feet of Thanksgiving Snow

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and while many of us are still shaking off the meat sweats, our friends in Mammoth, California have been busy. They’re just about finished digging out after an intense storm descended on the Sierra Nevada Mountains last week, burring the ski area and town in over two feet of snow.

The Sierra Nevada’s stretch along the northern California-Nevada border. These mountains often see large, moisture-laden clouds roll in off the Pacific Ocean, bringing storms that coat these towering peaks. While the so-called “Sierra Cement” snow can often be thick, colder temps can lead to the arrival of pristine blower pow. By the looks of it, last week delivered a mix of conditions, but who can complain about knee-deep turns in November?

Lucky for us, photographer Cody Mathison worked his way around Mammoth Mountain at night as the snow tumbled down. Enjoy these shots of what is hopefully the first of many pow-filled FREESKIER photo galleries this winter.
