The first of the 2013 X Games Aspen hardware (for skiers, at least) was clinched tonight, the superpipe gold going to South Lake Tahoe’s Maddie Bowman, silver to Calgary, Alberta’s Rosalind Groenewoud and the bronze to Megan Gunning—also from Calgary.

Eight women dropped into the 567-foot-long, 22-foot-tall, 66-foot-wide superpipe tonight, each for three runs, with the best run score counting in the end.

Maddie Bowman bagged the highest score of the day on her first run, opening with a rightside 900, and linking her first stunt with a left 540, a straight air tail, a leftside cork 900, a rightside 720 and a switch 540 to close. Her efforts earned her a 91.33. “I feel awesome. I’m on cloud nine right now. I’m sure it’ll hit me harder in a little bit,” said Bowman after the event. “I was nervous since I did well on my first run, but couldn’t land the others… so it was nerve-wracking tonight to watch the others go. But I’m just so happy I did well.”

Following Maddie in the standings was 2012 X Games superpipe gold medalist Rosalind Groenewoud. Roz’s run consisted of a lofty straight air mute to open, a rightside 9, left 5, right 5, left 7 and a switch 5. “I feel pretty good, all my runs had little mistakes in them, so I’m bummed that I couldn’t quite pull it together tonight,” said Groenwoud. “But that’s the way it goes sometimes. So, I’m just super glad that even though it wasn’t a perfect night I managed to end up second.” This marks Roz’s fourth career X Games medal.

And rounding out the podium tonight was Ms. Megan Gunning, securing her first podium after returning from a knee injury. Throwing a massive straight air to open, Megan followed up with a rightside 9, left 5, right 5, straight air, rightside 7 and switch alley-oop 9. Her efforts earned her an even 85, good enough for the bronze—her second career X Games medal. “I’m really excited. It was a really fun contest. This was my first podium in a while,” explained Gunning. “I feel pretty good about my run. I feel like there are some things I can work on, but overall, getting the switch alley-oop 9 in there, and the regular nine… I’m psyched.”

Just missing the podium was Canadian Keltie Hansen. Keltie’s run included a nice first-hit 900, and back-to-back flairs mid-run. Behind Keltie on the scoresheet was Carmel, CA’s Brita Sigourney. Brita was a favorite coming into the event, and skied well throughout this week’s practice sessions, but was unable to hang on for a 100% clean run this evening.

Additional props go out to Jen Hudak, who’s skiing well coming off of her knee rehabilitation, Annalisa Drew who was ever so close to stomping a 1260 on her first hit of run number three, and Anais Caradeux, who took an ultra nasty spill on her first run, but opted to drop in for runs 2 an 3, seemingly unfazed. While finishing last, Anais certainly earned some street cred tonight.
