Heli-skiing’s pioneer: The Legend of Mike Wiegele

Call Me Crazy is the story of Mike Wiegele and the birth of heli-skiing in North America. Born in Austria, Wiegele moved to Canada by way of California in the late 1950s, settling in Banff, Alberta, as a ski instructor. A constant dreamer—and an avid powder skier—Wiegele had visions of accessing big-mountain terrain by means of helicopter, and was initally scoffed at for his outlandish vision. In the early 1970s, he started his own heli-skiing operation based out of a railroad town in British Columbia and it didn’t take long for people to catch on…

In this short documentary, combining classic ski footage and new interviews, the history of Mike Wiegele’s impact on skiing is captured in beautiful fashion. If you’ve ever dreamt of heli-skiing, experiencing untouched powder snow for a week-straight based out of a high-alpine lodge, you have Wiegele to thank.

Take twenty minutes and watch this movie—you won’t regret it.
