The sixth annual Dumont Cup is taking place at Sunday River Ski Resort on March 28-29, 2014. The event is the brainchild of Bethel, Maine-native, and freeskiing legend Simon Dumont, who wanted to provide an opportunity for up-and-coming East Coast skiers to gain a bit of national exposure; the Dumont Cup remains the only AFP Platinum level event that features an open format, where anyone can enter to compete.
Note: Registration is still open for the 2014 Dumont Cup through the AFP website.
The Dumont Cup has helped catapult the careers of skiers like Nick Goepper, Gus Kenworthy and Joss Christensen, who just so happened to complete a United States sweep of the Olympic slopestyle podium in Sochi this past February. On the heels of freeskiing’s Olympic debut, this year’s Dumont Cup is sure to be the biggest iteration of the event to date: Olympians Goepper, Kenworthy, Christensen, Torin Yater-Wallace, Bobby Brown, Aaron Blunck and Alex Beaulieu-Marchand have already confirmed that they will be competing. In addition, heavy hitters such as McRae Williams, Alex Schlopy, Matt Walker, Vincent Gagnier and Kai Mahler will be throwing down on the course, as well.

For years, the Dumont Cup has been the East Coast’s premier freeskiing event, drawing local talent and top-name pros alike, and the spring vibe and incredible course layout has always made the event a huge hit. This year, Sunday River has upped the ante, as the event will take place on the all-new, 15-acre T72 terrain park. And, thanks to recent snow storms in New England, the skiing conditions and course features are sure to be outstanding. In regards to this year’s Dumont Cup course, Sunday River’s terrain parks manager, Morgan Rudd, has indicated that the jumps will be much bigger, and will include two separate takeoffs.
Earlier this season, Sunday River and Freeskier held a Design a Feature Contest for the new T72 park. After sifting through many quality submissions, Nick Hall’s urban plaza idea was chosen as the winner of the contest. For his efforts, Hall won a trip to this year’s Dumont Cup, and Snow Park Technologies quickly began building the feature, which is now erected in the T72 park.
Interestingly enough, the 2014 Olympic slopestyle podium trio also hit the podium at the Dumont Cup in 2012, and 2013—albeit in a few different positions. Christensen, Kenworthy and Goepper will surely be looking to defend their spots at the top—and now’s your chance to compete against ’em. As mentioned above, registration for the contest remains open; you can sign up now via this link.
