CAPILANO UNIVERSITY TOURISM STUDENTS TO PRODUCE BIG AIR INVITATIONAL AT TWSSF!

(Whistler, BC – April 20, 2011) The Big Air Competition returns to the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival (TWSSF) this year on Saturday April 23rd from 8pm-11pm. For the first time the World Skiing Invitational / AFP World Championship Big Air Competition will be produced by Destination Resort Management students from Capilano University in Squamish.

After 9 years as part of the TWSSF, this year’s Big Air Competition will feature some of the worlds most talented freestyle skiers competing for nearly fifty thousand dollars in cash and prizes with a first place prize of a brand-new 2012 Chevrolet Cruze courtesy of sponsor Chevrolet. The Big Air atmosphere heats up with live entertainment by the Ghetto Funk Canada Showcase – Featuring: Stickybuds, JPod, The Funk Hunters, Bryx, Wood & MC Think Tank.

As part of their event management course, the Capilano University students will be responsible for the entertainment and production of the competition guided by TWSSF Executive Director and course instructor Sue Eckersley. Capilano University student and production team member Ryan Clarke says, “This is a great career building opportunity and a fantastic real life experience. We’re very fortunate to be a part of such a well-respected event in a great town like Whistler”.

“This is exactly what this program is all about, it provides opportunities for our students to learn first hand what it takes to put on such a big event,” added Destination Resort Management program Convenor Stephanie Wells, “combining classroom education with a ‘get-out-and-do-it’ attitude will give these students a great head start in the Tourism Industry”.

With a big jump, big names, big tricks and even bigger party atmosphere, the awe-inspiring Big Air Competition is the crown jewel of the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival and is one event that no-one should miss.

MEET CANADA’S TOP HALFPIPE SKIERS IN WHISTLER AT TWSSF

Less than three weeks after the International Olympic Committee announced the inclusion of ski halfpipe in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, the top Canadian halfpipe skiers will be available for media interviews in Whistler, B.C.

The athletes will be in Whistler competing in the Superpipe at the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival and will be available on April 21 for a short media conference where Canadian Freestyle Ski Association CEO Peter Judge will outline the plan for developing a National Halfpipe Ski Team and introduce the Team’s new coach, Trennon Paynter.
