Black Diamond has announced a recall on the Recon LT avalanche transceivers. On the morning of February 14, the Salt Lake City-based brand issued a statement saying the recall is rooted in a possible corrosion issue in regards to a metal component in the beacon’s switch mechanism. Read on for important information and instructions on how to proceed with the recall.

“In some cases, the metal contact of the Recon LT’s switch mechanism may corrode,” the official report reads. “If this occurs, the device could malfunction or turn off, potentially hindering avalanche rescue efforts and increasing the risk of serious injury or death. Consumers who own the Black Diamond Recon LT should immediately stop using it and follow the recall procedures.”

While Black Diamond didn’t elaborate on how the issue went unnoticed through the manufacturing process, they did explain that it was brought to light by consumers, with six reports recently submitted to the brand. There have been no injuries, accidents or fatalities linked to the transceiver malfunction.

It’s important to note that the recall applies to the individual Recon LT as well as the Black Diamond safety sets that it was sold in. These include both the Black Diamond Alpine Avy Safety Set and the Black Diamond Recon LT Avy Safety Set. Don’t try to risk it for the rest of the winter. While it can be a pain, it’s far better to go through with the recall as soon as possible ensuring you have many more pow days to come.
