All About That Base: The deepest snow depths in North America, January 2019

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, allow us to break the news to you: It’s friggin’ dumping snow. Mountains across the United States have been buried as everywhere from Alta, Utah to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to Squaw, California have seen once-in-a-generation-type snow storms rolling through on an almost constant basis. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to head to the mountains, January’s snowfall totals should have you drooling and February is shaping up to be all time. Here are the deepest bases for you to flock to.


Northeast – NY, VT, ME, NH, MA

Suicide Six, Vermont: 37″-67″ Base Depth

One of America’s oldest ski resorts, and one that defines the term “local’s resort” was absolutely blessed with snowfall in January. It may only have three lifts, but it’s well worth a trip.

Bromley Mountain, Vermont: 44″-64″ Base Depth

The Sun Mountain is still going strong with a promising 10-day forecast.

Cannon Mountain, New Hampshire: 30″-60″ Base Depth

The home of America’s oldest tram–and the Granite State’s highest mountain–closed the month of January with close to a foot of fresh snow.


The Sierra – CA

Mammoth Mountain, California: 130″-195″ Base Depth

Mammoth has pulled down ten feet of snow since Saturday. TEN. FEET.

Soda Springs Mountain Resort, California: 182″ Base Depth

California’s longest running ski resort has received 50 inches of pow in the past three days.

Sugar Bowl, California: 109″-170″

As of this morning, Sugar Bowl has seen 18 inches of snow in the past 12 hours.


The Rockies – UT, WY, ID, CO, NM, UT

Alta Ski Area, Utah: 113″ Base Depth

It’s absolutely dumping at Alta right now, and the 10-day forecast shows that will be the trend for the foreseeable future.

Snowbird, Utah: 113″ Base Depth

Brighton, Utah: 106″ Base Depth

The PNW’s true local’s hill is getting new snowfall this weekend and has lift tickets as cheap as $50.
