Australia is known for many things. Kangaroos, spiders, surfing and one rather large opera house, but if you don’t think of skiing when you think of the Land Down Under, it’s time to change that. A big storm rolled in from the south and smothered the mountainous regions of the country, dropping over 27 inches (70 cm) on several ski resorts.
This was just the kick many ski areas needed to jump-start their 2025 ski season. To celebrate, we’ve rounded up five of our favorite resorts in Australia that are officially open for the year!
Thredbo Resort
Open as of 6/11/25: 4 Lifts, 6 Trails, 1 Park
Thredbo received over 10 inches (25 cm) from the recent storm of the course of several days. While the resort hadn’t seen much precipitation in the prior weeks, cold temperatures allowed snowmaking crews to get a solid base down in the Beginner Bowl. It was enough to get a small park up and running, keeping the stoke high for the season to come! Thredbo Parks always gets creative with their builds, and we can’t wait to see what they pull out this year. Plus, this song from the resort should win a damn marketing award.
Falls Creek
Open as of 6/11/25: 3 Lifts, 5 Trails
The storm total at Falls Creek was 27 inches (71 cm) over the last week. The end of the storm brought a fair bit of ice as well, forcing the mountain ops crew to work extra hard to open lifts. They were able to open three, and recently announced that the Drovers Dream and Eagle Express lifts will both be opening on June 13. With the new Cloud 9 restaurant up and running, this is a great spot to get some early-season laps (and eats) in as the mountain continues to fill in.
Perisher Resort
Open as of 6/11/25: 4 Lifts, 3 Trails, 1 Park
Perhaps the most famous ski resort in Australia, Perisher walked away with over 27 inches (70 cm) from the first big storm of the season. It was enough to get several lifts and a terrain park up and running to kick off winter 2025. The forecast looks moderate for the coming days, but temperatures are supposed to stay below 35°F, which should keep conditions from deteriorating. Who knows, maybe this will be the season we see the return of PlayStation sponsorships and SLVSH Cup Perisher. And if you’re planning to get an Epic Pass for the Australian ski season, the last day to do so is June 18!
Hotham Alpine Resort
Open as of 6/11/25: 6 Lifts, 15 Trails
Hotham just might have been the big winner from this storm. Cars were buried as two and a half feet of snow descended on the snow gum trees. Currently, Hotham has the most terrain open in the country, with six lifts and 15 trails operational. Keep this one at the top of your list as the season keeps rolling Down Under, as Hotham can harbor some of the best terrain in Australia when conditions line up. Just check out the photos from our chat from 2024 with pro skier and Hotham local Drew Jolowicz for the proof!
Mt Buller
Open as of 6/11/25: 3 Lifts, 2 Trails
After a successful opening weekend, Mt Buller stayed in the clouds and was able to open Abom Express to intermediate and advanced riders. The forecast for the coming days looks the best at Buller out of the resorts on this list, with several inches inbound between Sunday, June 15 and Wednesday, June 18. Plus, if you’re looking for a solid aprés spot, we’d have to say Mt Buller might be a good place to start based on the party that kicked off the season.
