2013 AFP World Tour calendar boasts largest competition season to date

Words by AFP:

Tahoe City, CA (August 1, 2012) – The Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) announced today the tentative 2013 AFP World Tour Calendar with dates of scheduled AFP sanctioned events as well as sanctioned events that are still in the process of confirming dates and sanctioning levels.

AFP’s Executive Director, Eric Zerrenner, explains why publishing the Calendar now is necessary: "With the Olympic Qualifying Period beginning July 1, we set an August 1 release date for the [2013 AFP] World Tour Calendar for a couple of reasons. 1) to give athletes as much time as possible to review the calendar and plan their competition schedule accordingly, and 2) to motivate event organizers to submit their event applications as early as possible and get their sanctioned event confirmed within the World Tour calendar."

afp_logo_2012_1_0.jpegThe 2012/13 season will be unprecedented with the inclusion of FIS World Cups in the scale that they have been implemented. Zerrenner expresses his enthusiasm towards the release of the robust calendar, "It’s always exciting when the World Tour calendar is released – it means ski season is right around the corner and the start of a new competition season leading up to the crowning of the next AFP World Champion. This season is particularly exciting given how robust the calendar is and the inclusion of World Cups. We have worked extremely hard with NGB's, FIS, and event organizers to integrate and embrace these events into the AFP World Tour. It should be a great season."

Not only is the AFP focusing on the upper level events, but freeskiing’s foundations as well. AFP’s Operations Manager, Steele Spence shares his excitement, "The 2013 AFP World Tour Schedule will have a further reach than we could have imagined only a few years ago.  This season, with more events worldwide reaching freeskiing’s grassroots level of competitor, we will continue to provide a clear path for skiers to climb our global ranking system and reach their goals."

Spence elaborates on the growth of the AFP due to the growth of the AFP’s World Tour calendar, "In addition to uniting freeskiing events around the world, the AFP has also worked to create judging consistency through our judging certification clinics.  Every event on the World Tour Calendar uses AFP certified judges, ensuring consistent scoring as well as contributing to the accuracy of the AFP World Ranking."

The 2013 AFP World Tour Calendar will continually be updated as events lock in their dates with partnering resorts and sponsors, so stay tuned for more updates regarding the 2013 AFP World Tour Calendar and other freeskiing news from the AFP.
