11 Must-Dos on Your Next Trip to Whistler

11 Must-Dos on Your Next Trip to Whistler

Whistler Blackcomb is one of the most iconic ski destinations in the world, offering a mix of legendary terrain, top-tier dining and vibrant nightlife. Whether you’re chasing deep turns, indulging in world-class après or exploring the surrounding British Columbian winter wonderland, here are eleven suggested experiences to make your Whistler Blackcomb trip unforgettable.

1. Dive into North America’s most classic runs

Whistler Blackcomb is renowned for its sprawling inbounds and out-of-bounds terrain, which is unlike almost anything else in North America. Inside the boundary, runs like Spanky’s Ladder and Surf’s Up will surely put your skills to the test. Outside the boundary, and bisecting Blackcomb Peak, is one of the area’s most iconic backcountry test pieces: DOA (which stands for Down, Over, Around). Best accessed via skins up Blackcomb Glacier and around the back of the peak, this dramatic couloir—which hits a 45 degree pitch in places—begins with a tight choke before the walls open into a wider, yet still committing descent. Because of its south-facing aspect the snow is frequently sun affected, which adds another challenging element. When DOA is caught in good snow the thrill upon exiting the line into the open bowl below is hard to match, but make sure you’re carrying the proper avy gear, have the necessary route-finding, snowpack assessment and self rescue skills before heading out of bounds to this classic line.

2. Explore the Mountain via the Wonder Routes

New this season, Whistler Blackcomb’s Wonder Routes transform the vastness of North America’s largest ski resort into a choose your own adventure style playground. The various circuits guide skiers through the area’s most interesting terrain, views, lifts and hidden gems. The ‘Top of the World’ route, for example,  sweeps across high-alpine bowls with jaw-dropping panoramic views, while ‘The Alpine Sampler’ challenges experts with iconic descents like Blackcomb’s Couloir Extreme and Whistler’s West Cirque. Families can enjoy the playful twists of the ‘Family Certified Route’ while soft snow seekers will revel in the ‘Glade Stashes Checklist’. With each itinerary marked on the trail map, finding your perfect Whistler experience is effortless. Whether you’re seeking steep thrills, family-friendly fun or breathtaking vistas, these curated routes deliver wonder in spades.

3. Take a Hike to the Kees and Claire Hut

For those looking to explore beyond the resort, a ski tour out to Kees and Claire Hut (maybe even an overnight stay if you can secure an opening) is worth your time. Accessed via skins from the top of Whistler Mountain, this hut is surrounded by stunning alpine landscapes and blow-your-mind ski lines. If you’re up for the challenge, the surrounding terrain offers everything from mellow glades to steep couloirs. Be sure to check avalanche conditions and go prepared with proper safety gear.

4. Indulge in the Local Bakery Scene

A must-visit for anyone with a penchant for pastry is Purebread Bakery. This quaint and cozy spot, which has locations off the Village Stroll and just outside of Whistler proper in Function Junction, is famous for its flaky croissants and decadent brownies. Whether you need a morning boost (yes, they serve a full variety of coffee drinks) or an afternoon pick-me-up, you won’t regret letting your sweet tooth run amuck. Beyond pastries, their savory options—like the cheddar jalapeño scones—are equally legendary. Consider yourself warned, popular items sell out fast!

If you have a hankering for sugar but are already all booted up, the melt-in-your-mouth cinnamon buns from Chic Pea are a must try. This quick service stop will have you in and out and loading the lift with a hot breakfast in no time. Or if you decide to start your morning on the Blackcomb side of the resort, don’t sleep on Crystal Hut’s famous buttermilk waffles. These will have you fueled up for a full day of skiing and likely planning your near future return for seconds.

5. Take in the spectacle that is Whistler’s Fire & Ice show

If après were fireworks, it would be Whistler’s Fire & Ice Show. A blazing spectacle that combines big air and pyrotechnics, this free event is held every Sunday night (until March 9th) at 7:30 p.m. at the Skier’s Plaza. Set to pumping music and dazzling lights, this might just be the only time in your life you’ll have a chance to witness shredders launch massive tricks through flaming rings. Blending freestyle mastery with fiery theatrics, it’s a wild spectacle. And if you’re still craving action when the 30 minute show comes to an end, the party continues at The Longhorn Saloon, where DJs and drinks keep the establishment’s famous Vegas-style vibe alive. This Whistler experience is straight fire!

6. Mush It Up on a Dog Sledding Adventure

For an unforgettable off-mountain adventure, go dog sledding with Canadian Wilderness Adventures. Led by a team of enthusiastic canines, glide your way through snowy forests while learning about this old-school mode of travel. The guides will introduce you to the dogs and teach you the basics of mushing before you set off on a scenic journey through the Callaghan Valley. It’s an incredible way to experience Whistler’s beautiful backcountry. Caution: don’t eat the yellow snow!

7. Ski the Couloir Extreme

If you want to test your mettle, the Saudan Couloir—also known as Couloir Extreme—is one of the most famous resort lines in all of Canada. This teeteringly steep run on Blackcomb Mountain features a pitch of up to 42 degrees and serves as the initial leg of the World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s Saudan Couloir Ski Race Extreme, which has been run off and on since 1987. It probably goes without saying, but it’s best to rip Saudan’s in fresh pow, so keep an eye on the weather. Beyond the Saudan Couloir, be sure to check out Spanky’s Ladder for access to some of Blackcomb’s most legendary terrain, or ride Whistler’s Peak Express and scope the famed ‘Air Jordan’ cliff huck. Mid skiers need not apply.

8. Heli-skiing at Whistler Blackcomb

Whistler Blackcomb may be North America’s largest ski resort, but its heli-skiing operation dwarfs the resort in comparison. Whistler Heli-Skiing commands exclusive access to 432,000 acres of terrain spread across 11 distinct zones with 450 named runs. Thanks to its prime coastal location, the operation gets an average annual snowfall of 38 feet, ensuring pristine conditions throughout its December-to-April season. Whether you are skiing Powder Cruise in the Brandywine Zone or Ripsaw Glacier, which has a 5,019 ft vertical drop, you are guaranteed untouched pow turns in British Columbia’s Coastal Range.

9. Soak up some wellness at the Scandinave Spa

After pushing your limits on the mountain, unwind at Scandinave Spa. This serene retreat, nestled in the forest, features hydrotherapy baths, saunas and steam rooms designed for ultimate relaxation. The contrast of hot and cold therapy promotes circulation, muscle recovery, and mental clarity. If you’re on a tighter budget, the Meadow Park Sports Centre offers a more affordable hot tub experience with stunning mountain views. Either way, a little recovery time will ensure you’re ready to hit the mountain again the next day.

10. Après in Style at the Mallard Lounge

For a more refined après experience, head to The Mallard Lounge at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. This elegant spot offers craft cocktails, fine wines and a cozy atmosphere complete with fireplaces and live music. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone birthday or just looking to impress your IG followers, this is the place to do it in style. Their signature smoked old fashioned is a must-try, and the outdoor fire pits provide the perfect setting to unwind while taking in views of Blackcomb Mountain.

11. Get your party on at the FREE World Ski & Snowboard Festival

The village comes alive with concerts and events

If you plan on visiting Whistler this year between April 7th and 13th, you won’t be able to miss the festivities that encompass the World Ski & Snowboard Festival (WSSF). This free, weeklong event is a high-energy celebration that takes place right in the village, featuring on-snow races, live music, art exhibits and yes, legendary parties. WSSF is a must for anyone looking to experience Whistler at its peak. The event attracts some of the biggest names in skiing and snowboarding, making it the perfect opportunity to watch (or compete in) high-stakes competitions while partying like a pro. Be sure not to miss the prime spectating at the aforementioned Saudan Couloir Ski Race Extreme for the full experience.

From mobbing down legendary lines to strolling the village with coffee in hand and letting it all hang out at the WSSF, Whistler has something for everyone. However you choose to enjoy your trip to the Coast Mountains of B.C., these experiences will ensure your trip is nothing short of unforgettable.
