When it comes to winter exploration in the mountains, what you’re wearing next to skin will arguably make or break your day. Having the right fabric and fit in your base layer accounts for adequate body temperature regulation, moisture wicking and overall comfort. From natural fibers like Merino wool and synthetics like nylon and polyester to the weight of the fabric to added performance features like thumb holes and hoods, there’s a lot to consider when snatching up a new set of underwear. Below are seven sets of base layers that I’ve tried over the course of the season and have successfully stood up to sweaty ascents, below-zero temps and waist-deep powder days.
Mauna Kea Raglan and Legging, Wild Rye

With a design inspired by Hawaii’s highest peak, the Mauna Kea base layer set from Wild Rye performs as well as it looks. Made of 100 percent Merino wool, this top and bottom keep you warm, dry and smelling fresh no matter what you just accomplished in them. This set also has a more contemporary fit, meaning the top is a bit looser and boasts a longer silhouette to promote ease of movement. Meanwhile, thumb holes keep the sleeves in place and a wide, iridescent waistband on the legging ups the comfort ante so you can go from bagging peaks to aprés drinks sans outfit change.
Women’s Classic Ninja Suit, Airblaster

This one-piece, mid-weight base layer is made of 94 percent polyester and 6 percent lycra for superior moisture wicking and stretch and does an incredible job of holding in body heat. A full chest zipper makes stepping in and out of this baby super simple, and a 350-degree waist zipper makes for quick and easy bathroom breaks. One of my favorite features of this piece has to be the hood with a hole in the back for a ponytail so I can keep my hair tied back without sacrificing a draft down my back on blustery days. If hoods aren’t your thing, the Classic Ninja Suit is also available without one.
The Gentoo and Serval Bra, Matek

Women’s Le Base 200 Lightweight Crew and Bottom, Le Bent

Made from the brand’s signature blend of Rayon from bamboo and Merino wool, the Le Base 200 is one of the most versatile base layers I’ve come across. Despite being lightweight, this layer has proved time and time again that it will keep me warm when it’s cold and dry when I start working up a sweat. Boasting a compression-like fit with flat seams and a high-waisted band on the bottoms, the Le Base 200 is the perfect piece for sun-up-to-sun-down wear.
Women’s Aspect Midweight Merino Wool Long Sleeve and Bottoms, Ridge Merino

Women’s Fair Lines Long Sleeve and Long Johns, Pally’Hi
Go from the slopes to the streets in the Women’s Fair Lines long sleeve and long johns. Made from 100 percent Merino wool, this base layer is function-focused, keeping you toasty warm when the thermometer drops, dry when things start heating up and stink free all of the time. Featuring screen printed hand-drawn hoops on the left arm and leg, the Fair Lines top and bottom are effortlessly rad and totally functional.
