The International Freeski Film Festival (iF3) debuted 11 years ago to showcase the year’s best freeskiing films and to shine a light on the freeski culture. This year, the largest independent film festival of its kind certainly did not disappoint in Montreal, Quebec, Canada October 18-20. It was a weekend chock-full of movie premieres and after parties that bumped late into the night but the highlight of the weekend, of course, came with the highly-anticipated awards ceremony on Saturday evening.
Andrew Mildenberger took home both Best Cinematography and Film of the Year for Strictly Business in the Amateur Category. In the Athlete Category, Sam Kuch walked away with Discovery of the Year for Beyond The Powder Highway, Elyse Saugstad snagged Best Female Performance for Matchstick Productions’ All In, Pär Peyben Hägglund was awarded Best Male Street Segment from Level 1 Productions’ Zig Zag and Best Male Freeride Segment went to Parker White for his performance in Zig Zag as well.
For the Pro Category, Tanner Hall won Best Short Movie for his film Here After, Best Cinematography and Best Editing both went to Teton Gravity Research for Far Out and Level 1 Productions’ Zig Zag took home Film of the Year. The Open Category, which accepts ski, snowboard and combo movies, gave out four of the six awards to ski films including Matchstick Productions’ HOJI for Best Storytelling, Kevin Rolland’s Oh My Ghost for Best Short Video, The Bunch’s Color for Standout Urban Movie and Blank Collective Films’ Before Blank for Standout Big Mountain Film.
The film festival continues this weekend, November 9-10, in Whistler, British Columbia with the first day entirely dedicated to skiing. The first movie screening–which is free for everyone–starts at 3 p.m. on November 9 at the Long Horn Saloon and will feature nine movies including The Fire that Saved Sun Valley from Origin Outside, Tanner Hall’s Here After, The Faction Collective’s La Grave and Jeremy Pancras’ Would You. The second movie screening of the day will start at 7 p.m. and go until 10 p.m. at the Long Horn Saloon but requires a ticket for entry–which also gets you into the after party with DJ PRAIZ–and you must be 19 or older. Matchstick Productions’ All In, Level 1 Productions’ Zig Zag, Beyond the Powder Highway Ep. 1 and 2 from Forecast Ski Magazine, Lena Stoffel’s Winterfox and Kevin Rolland’s Oh My Ghost will all be featured at the evening screening.
