Since taking its first guests on a helicopter-powered ski trip over 50 years ago, CMH Heli-Skiing has catered exceptional, powder-laden experiences in the famed wilderness of Alberta and British Columbia to thousands of skiers. Before now, powderhounds had to make the trek up north to bask in the untouched splendors of CMH’s terrain, but for the first time ever, the operation is bringing its world-class heli-skiing to the masses via virtual reality.
In partnership with award-winning Sherpas Cinema and Google’s Virtual Reality team, CMH has produced a mind-blowing virtual reality heli-skiing video called Lines of Sight: A Guided Virtual Reality Experience. The five-minute film was shot entirely at CMH Cariboos using cutting-edge technology from Google and Sherpas. Team FREESKIER had a sneak peek of the experience at our Denver offices last week, and it was absolutely mind-blowing. But, we recommend you still actually go heli-skiing.
“Being able to work with the best in the industry in a truly collaborative manner allowed us to push the boundaries of technology and bring the heli-skiing experience to a wider market,” said Julia LoVecchio, director of marketing at CMH, in a recent press release.
For the 2018-19 ski season, CMH will be making pit stops at six of the Ikon Pass mountain destinations for viewers to step inside a CMH helicopter, throw on a set of VR goggles and take the ride of a lifetime. Lines of Sight takes the viewer through every step of the journey–from buckling into the bird to carving down the slopes of Cariboo Mountain–through the perspective of ACMG Mountain Guide, Craig McGee, for an inspiring taste of what it’s like to ski at CMH.
