Two years ago, FREESKIER launched its inaugural Photo Shootout—a national photo contest with a $10,000 prize pool.
Over 4,000 photos were submitted by 1,126 photographers, making it a smashing success. Our readers cast north of 65,000 votes for their favorite photos, helping us to narrow the vast pool of imagery down to a batch of incredibly talented finalists, and then our judging panel had the difficult task of choosing the final winners. Finally, we took things one step further, taking the winning photos on the road for a full-fledged gallery tour. All told: This was our way of giving back and saying “Thanks!” to the hard-working photographers out there.
This summer, we’re bringing it back, again with $10,000 on the line. We want to see even more eye-popping photography, but with a different vibe this time around. We know that the FREESKIER audience is busy in the mountains all summer long so for the second Photo Shootout, we’ll be tasking you, the talented photographers of the world, to submit your best summer-themed images. The categories this time around will be: Adventure, Mountain Lifestyle, Scenic and Abstract. Whether it’s images of ripping mountain bikers, sky-scraping peaks, raging river rapids or cozy campfire scenes, we want to see how you’re making the most of your time in the mountains this summer. Charge your batteries, clear out your hard drives and get ready to submit. And those of you who don’t consider yourselves photographers, be sure to come and check out all the submissions, vote for your favorites and help us narrow down the finalists. The competition starts on July 17, 2017 and runs through August 11, 2017.

FREESKIER’s Photo Shootout: Summer Edition is open to residents of the United States and Canada, excluding Quebec.
Who are the judges?
The team at FREESKIER magazine and you, the voters.
What will you win?
We have $10,000 available in prize money. We’re talking serious cash. Each of the four category winners will get $1,000, and another $1,000 will go to the winner of the People’s Choice vote. The People’s Choice category will be compiled by you, the users, in which the Judging Panel will choose from the top ten voted-on photos once the voting period ends. Once the five winners are determined, the Judging Panel will select one Grand Prize winner from the pool of five winners, based on overall impression. The Grand Prize winner gets the remaining $5,000.
How do you enter?
A timer on shootout.freeskier.com is currently counting down to when the competition begins on July 17 at noon Mountain Time. There is also a place to enter your email if you want to be reminded to submit your photos for the Shootout. You can upload as many photos to as many categories as you would like, but you can’t upload the same photo in multiple categories. Once we receive your photo, your entry will have a unique URL on the Shootout website. From there it’s up to you to get sharing. The ten photos with the most votes will be considered for the People’s Choice award.
