It’s always been in plain sight, but, like some sort of supermodel in a Victoria’s Secret catalog, always been out of reach. That will all change when some of the world’s top international freeskiers and riders roll into Squaw on Feb 27 for the Nissan Tram Face. This event, part of the prestigious Freeride World Tour, will see athletes granted the rare opportunity to conquer the steep and seemingly unskiable rock face below Squaw Valley ski resort’s Tower One (known as “Tram Faceâ€). The face’s permanent closure makes it one of the most coveted lines to extreme freeriders.
The event is the only North American stop on the 2009 Freeride World Tour and is expected to breathe even bigger life into Squaw with street parties, live music and nonstop festivities.
The tour’s other stops feature events at Nissan Russian Adventure Sochi, Russia (Nissan Russian Adventure, 20-25 January), Tignes, France (Nissan Freeride de Tignes, 8-14 March) and Verbier, Switzerland (Nissan Xtreme, 20-29 March), plus a full slate of qualifying events in North America and Europe, the Freeride World Tour is undoubtedly the top big-mountain freeride tour in the world, with more money, better organization and an athlete-centric focus unlike competing tours run by other organizations.
